In the autumn of 1990, the first model of the new Valmet lineup was introduced, the 8100 with 120 horsepower. It featured a new 20-series naturally aspirated six-cylinder engine and a 24+24 speed transmission with a reverser and helical gears. The front-end appearance resembled that of the MF-based Megas. The cab was new and equipped with curved windows. The noise level was a moderate 78-79 dB, typical for that time. The cab was manufactured by Maaseudun Kone.
The Autocontrol electric lift was standard equipment, and in the E model, there was Autocontrol III, which included, among other things, slip control, an onboard computer, and Powershift automation. The front axle was a Sige, and a heavier-duty industrial front axle was available as an option.
In the summer of 1991, the 8000 with 98 horsepower was introduced for customers who wanted a smaller six-cylinder. It was based on the technology of the 6400. Technically, the 8000 belonged more to the Mezzo series than the Mega series. The 8000 had a torque converter clutch as standard (until 1994). Other Megas were not equipped with a torque converter clutch.
At the end of 1992, the 8100 TS "turvespecial" designed for peat bogs was introduced. It featured, among other things, an easily cleaned front grille with wider spacing between the slats, a heavier-duty PTO, dual air filtration in the cab, and a turbocharged 140 hp engine. In spring 1993, it was replaced by the regular production model, the Valmet 8400, for which bog equipment was available as an option.
Also in spring 1993, the three-stage Powershift was introduced. The new intermediate model 8200 was equipped with a 7.4-liter engine so that a Pulling tractor could be built based on it. In spring 1994, Autocontrol II was introduced as standard equipment, which included automatic differential lock control and a stop position added to the raise-lower switch. Autocontrol IV models featured three-stage Powershift automation.
In the 1995 models, the final drive ratio was slower than before, but the Powershift speeds were correspondingly faster. Previously, the middle Powershift gear ratio was direct; now it was the lowest gear. The gearing of the drive train also differed from earlier models.
