At the beginning of 1991, the first models of the Mezzo series were introduced: the three-cylinder 6100 (79 hp) and the four-cylinder 6300 (85 hp), 6400 (95 hp), and 6600 (105 hp). The basic structure was similar to the 05 series: the engine was located above the front axle, and the fuel tank positioned between the engine and gearbox served as part of the load-bearing structure. The engines were the new 20 series. The transmission had a reverser with 12+12 speeds and, as an optional accessory, a Volvo BM quick shift offering 24+24 speeds. The transmission now also featured low gears, and whining noise was eliminated thanks to helical gears. A hydraulic clutch was available as an option, chosen by nearly half of Mezzo buyers.
