Case IH MXU 100-135 Maxxum / Steyr 4100 – 6135 Profi

Case IH MXU Maxxum replaced the Steyr-designed CS models and the British MX Maxxums in 2003. Production took place in Austria, but apart from a few minor details, the MXU was essentially New Holland’s TSA series, which itself was built in England. The engines were completely new NEF units (New Engine Family) conforming to the EU’s Stage IIIA emissions standard. In the four-cylinder models the displacement was 4.5 liters, and in the six-cylinder models 6.7 liters. All engines were turbocharged and charge-air-cooled, and featured a viscous fan. The MXU100 and MXU115 engines had a distributor-type pump. The engines in the other models were electronically controlled four-valve units with common-rail injection. These more advanced versions had an extra-power feature that could be engaged when sufficient power demand was detected at the PTO. Using road speed on the X-Power transmission models activated the extra power from gear 13 upwards.
On the S-Power version, there were 24 forward and 24 reverse gears achieved by a two-stage hydraulic powershift. It also included a hydraulic reverser and electric hitch control. The X-Power version had 16 forward and 16 reverse gears. In addition to four powershifts, two ranges could be selected electro-hydraulically, and the operator only needed to use the clutch when switching from the low to the high range. The electronically injected models, as well as the MXU100 and MXU115 DeLuxe versions, featured transmission automation that shifted slowly through every gear. There was also an option for the X-Power transmission to achieve speeds up to 48 km/h, which added a 17th gear.
The differential locks were engaged hydraulically and also operated automatically in response to hitch lift and drop. As an option, there was a fully programmable headland management system. The PTO had three standard speeds. Hydraulic output figures were impressive, and there were four external hydraulic valves as standard. The X-Power model had a closed hydraulic circuit with a flow of 113 l/min. The S-Power used a conventional gear pump delivering 80 l/min. The MXU135 came standard with electro-hydraulically controlled remote valves. A trailer brake valve was standard on all models except the MXU100. The linkage control levers were rotary-type push-buttons, similar to competitor brands but different from New Holland’s design. Other control elements also varied slightly between brands.
The new cab was called “Space” and featured full-length glass doors on both sides. Interior trim in the Case IH version was beige. Noise level was rated at 72 dB. The exhaust pipe was integrated into the A-pillar. Standard equipment was generous and included air conditioning, a pneumatic seat, and a passenger seat. The X-Power DeLuxe models offered cab suspension based on coil springs and shock absorbers. Front axle suspension was also available, though the swiveling Super Steer front axle was not offered on Case IH models.
In autumn 2005, a more economical MXU X-Line range was introduced, and the original lineup was renamed MXU Pro. The MXU Pro 135 received headland management as standard. In Finland, the Pro models were always specified with the 16+16 transmission, a four-stage powershift, and load-sensing hydraulics.
The equivalent Steyr range was the 4100–6135 Profi series.
