In spring 2007 Case IH introduced the Puma series models 165–210, followed in autumn by the 125–155 models. Their naming scheme differed from the comparable New Holland ranges, since the larger Puma tractors corresponded to New Holland’s T7000 series, while the smaller ones matched the T6000 series. At Case IH, the Puma line replaced the aging MXM series.
The Puma engines are 6.7-litre, four-valve Iveco NEF units with electronic management. They deliver very high torque rises—37–47 percent—and their “extra-power” feature kicks in from gear 16 upward, i.e. at road speeds or when the PTO is engaged.
The transmission was carried over from the predecessor model. The base gearbox is an 18 + 6-speed Semi-Powershift with a six-speed splitter; range shifts are done electrically, and the shift-automation handles changes within each range. The more expensive option—and the standard fitment from model 165 upward—is the Full-Powershift, where power flow isn’t interrupted when shifting ranges. The creep-gear can be programmed. In the 50 km/h and 40 km/h Eco versions there’s one extra forward gear, powered directly from the engine, bypassing the main gearbox. On the larger models in Finland, a creeping range is standard, giving 29 + 12 speeds in total.
The hydraulic system uses a variable-displacement pump delivering 113–150 l/min and offers a lift capacity of 8 257–8 647 kg. External remote valves are optional, and up to eight hydraulic circuits can be installed (four rear, four mid-mount). The front axle has an automatic locking differential that disengages when the wheels are turned. On the 165–210 models in the 50 km/h version there’s a new active front-axle suspension that adjusts pressure during gear shifts, braking, direction changes, terrain variations and when using PTO-driven implements.
The cab is basically the same as on the Maxxum series and features full-height glass doors along each side. The controls differ from those on the New Holland equivalents, and the instrument cluster is arranged on the right-hand front pillar, as on the Magnum and CVX models. Depending on the version, the noise level is 69.6–70 dB. Standard equipment includes air conditioning and an air-suspended seat. As an option, New Holland offers a quick-steer system—known internally as Fast Steer—under the name “Turn Assist.”
