In the summer of 2002 New Holland’s updated TM series went on sale, with engines tuned to meet tighter emissions standards. At the same time the range was expanded by two larger models, the TM175 and TM190, which feature somewhat heavier-duty components in key areas. These tractors use electronically controlled engines that provide an extra 35 hp whenever sufficient power is being drawn through the PTO or the selected gear is 16 or higher. All TMs now carry the 7.5 L, turbocharged and intercooled Genesis engine, complete with a viscous fan.
In Finland there were three transmission choices. On the smaller models the entry-level option was the Dual Command, a 24+12 gearbox with a 2-range power shift. The 18+6 Range Command has a 6-range power shift: range changes are made by pushbutton but still interrupt the drive in the usual way. All models could also be ordered with the Power Command transmission, in which power flow is not interrupted when shifting ranges. By default it includes automatic shifting programs for field and road work, and gears are selected via pushbuttons on the main lever. Reverse can be programmed to engage 1–3 steps above or below the current gear. On the two largest models you could even opt for a 50 km/h driveline, where a 19th gear—complete with its own clutch and direct drive to the rear axle—minimizes power losses. Except on Dual Command versions, mechanical cab suspension is standard.
Lift capacity remains roughly the same as before, from 6 770 to 8 647 kg. Unlike other brands, lift height is adjusted via a sliding control. On the two biggest models the electrical system is based on a CAN bus, and you can specify an extended headland management package that lets you program up to 28 functions. The TM190 comes standard with electric hydraulic control valves; the smaller machines also have four-valve blocks as standard.
The cab has been refreshed primarily by enlarging the roof module. Air conditioning and an air-suspended seat come as standard equipment. Front suspension or the Super Steer front axle can be added as options on the RC- and PC-transmission models. Noise levels in the cab are relatively high—75–77 dB compared to many competitors. Fuel tanks have also been enlarged (285 l and 398 l).
At the same time New Holland introduced its equivalent, the Case IH MXM series. The main differences between the TM and the MXM lie in the layout and design of the lift and transmission levers.
In summer 2003 the stripped-down TM120 Classic arrived in Finland. It drops most of the refinements and uses a 20+16 gearbox without any power shift. A creeping-speed range is standard, raising the total to 40+32 speeds. Shuttle control is purely mechanical. The A- and B-range shifts are unsynchronized. The rear lift is mechanical, with a traditional draft-link sensing system. The closed-center hydraulics are replaced by a 53 l/min gear pump. Three hydraulic valves (without flow adjustment) plus a trailer brake valve are standard. Air conditioning and an air-suspended seat remain standard, though the seat is a simpler design than on the wider TM range. The instrument panel is the traditional five-dial type.
At the start of 2005 the side decals on the hood were redesigned. The optional headland management system was upgraded so that PTO on/off control could now be included. And on TM120–140 models you could order a heavier-duty front axle for an additional charge.
